This is the first of a four part series featuring women who are unsigned recording artists from the Cleveland metropolitan area. Although there will be more artists featured, the focus, as of the next three parts of this episode, is charity starting at home. In other words, I’m starting with what’s right here in my own front/back yards.
This episode features Barabara Barrett, a jazz, classical/opera, gospel and soul singer from Cleveland who has deep roots in her hometown jazz scene.
So for those who haven’t heard, I released an instrumental project called String Theory. This is, as my wife calls it, music for creatives.
This project is the musical interpretation of my wife’s fiber art collections. House Of Yarn was inspired by works that will amazingly accessorize any outfit.

The production concept for this track is cinematic and orchestral in texture with a house feel. I created the whole peice on my iPad in my dining room with stock orchestral samples provided in the Garage Band app. There were some filler textures needed so I played those myself and programmed the drums to make it “jack”. (Jack is a terminology used to describe house music as funky and danceable).
Ideally I envisioned the Akron Symphony Orchestra along with a DJ doing this song for a “haute couture” fashion show for my wife. We can dream right?
You can purchase or stream the song by clicking on the link ——->House Of Yarn. It’s Orchestra meets 808. Take a listen. ENJOY!!!
Ok! So there are rumors amongst home-based producers that says one DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) like Pro-Tools is better than Ableton or Cubase is better than Logic.
Let’s do the the challenge then. Tell one of your producer friends to turn on the radio. NO.. RIGHT NOW! Go to the radio. Listen to the first song that comes on. Ask him/her to tell you what DAW the song is recorded with. Without having inside knowledge, how would they know?
I’m waiting.. any clue? No? I’ll tell you. It was recorded with the one they prefer. It was mixed with the one they prefer. It was mastered on one that they prefer. Preference is the key. Experimenting on what is easy for you and what YOU like is the key.
Google and download some free/demo DAWs. Figure out which one YOU like. Try them all. Make sure you’ve had your computer set up for recording first.
NOTE: when purchasing a DAW, always keep in mind what it is you want to make at the end of the day. You get what you pay for in most cases.
The House Of Yarn. <—-Click on this link. But before you do, can you tell me what DAW I created this song in? Yeah I know. Shameless plug..
Remember. It’s not the size of your STUDIO that makes the music, but the size of MUSIC that makes the studio.
String Theory is a musical interpretation told by Staci J. Shelton, Jef Janis, and Eriq Troi through fiber art, photography and music.
String Theory is a pre-order. Once it goes available, you will get an email when your download is available. This is the first of many artistic installations to come. By all means, stay in touch with us via email so we can let you know when and where our next events are held.
You all might have seen the hash tag (#BloomingWherePlanted) around on some of the social media sites lately and have wondered what does this mean, right?
Well it’s all about maximizing everything around you to reach your dreams. To reach your fullest pontential right where you are. It’s a philosophical idea that I think being an artist/producer/musician in the Northeast Ohio area have yet to explore. Everything starts in the mind.. even the idea of “making it” in the music business locally. I really believe that if we change our mindset on how we see Cleveland and its surronding areas, we will discover an oasis custom made for what I declare and decree “The Ohio Sound”.
There is this myth that “you gotta leave Cleveland to make it”. I will respectfully beg to differ. If you look around closely you will see that you have EVERYTHING you need to create your utopia… here in Northeast Ohio. The idea is NOT to “do what they do” in L.A., New York, London, Atlanta, etc.. but NORTHEAST OHIO! I’ve had to travel the world to find out the beauty and uniqueness of what is right in my front yard… so I figured let me take advantage of it.
While thinking of what can I do, it HIT ME like a James Brown horn section while watching a Quincy Jones interview!!!
In the interview a young man asked Quincy “what can I do to be a producer”? I thought to my self hmmm that would be the question I’d ask him. He said “just go produce”. “Get some your friends together and make some music man”.. I figured hey I got some amazingly talented friends. Let me ask them if they’d wanna get on some these tracks I have just sitting and put it out to the world. Two and a half years later, this project is almost ready to be released to the world coming this summer.
Here (hear) is a track (NOT ON THE PROJECT) of one of the artists on the project. His name is Damien Nova. He is from Cleveland and has a sound of his own. You can check him out by this link.. https://soundcloud.com/damien-nova AGAIN THIS IS JUST A SAMPLE!!!
I would love to have you all get the sneak peak of the project. By all means subscribe so I can get you all on the email list. All of these amazing artists are from the Northeast Ohio area and have projects of their own and yet they all have allowed me to add them to this epic project.
As an indie artist, I must admit, I get discouraged from time to time with this music thing. As an indie artist I realize that I am in business for myself. Not only do I have to think of the music, but the avenues of how to get it to the public as efficiently as possible! This is NOT a complaint. This IS the lifestyle I chose. This choice of lifestyle has to be balanced with day job/home responsibilities with and the dream life I once had and want again.
As an artist, I am always asking this question… Am I making an impact with my music? I got an email that had to make me re-evaluate what is important about my gift of song. Of course I want to make money from my craft and to be able to support my family and all that other stuff, but DAG!!! I WANT IT NOW(in my Barucca Salts voice from Willy Wonka ) .. Well… Just when I was starting to accept the reality of having to deal with my day job for the rest of my life, I get THIS —->
“Hey Eriq, I almost pulled over my car earlier today … but wasn’t in a good place. Was listening to your new music in the car and it hit me somewhere deep inside. Hard to explain. It was very moving. You have incredible talent. You need to be touring! Just wanted you to know” – Julie White
She purchased the projectXOXO (Hugs & Kisses)and told me what she thought of it. These words are so empowering and the very thing that I needed to hear. Some folk might say that this is all about my ego or my insecurity as an artist. I think from an artists’ perspective, the ones who put it all on the line are the most vulnerable and at risk of being rejected and set aside.. (and even booed) .. To those who are quick to call artists “narcissistic” “egotistic” “insecure” then let me ask you.. Do YOU enjoy rejection for something you are passionate about? Of course you don’t .. NO ONE DOES! We have enough artists “playing it safe”.. which is why I think we as a society have an addiction to mediocrity – but that’s another blog..
This is merely a “thank-you” note to a person who valued what I did by purchasing it and making it a part of her life.. which what music is for in the first place.. right???
So glad you all made it to the page!!! Thank you guys SOOOOOO MUCH!!!
Just a little info for you guys.. I wrote, produced, performed, programmed, engineered, and composed every track on the project. I had a little help from my boy Shawn Charles who co-produced Electric Leviteand my home-girl Elaina Thompson who helped me with the background vocals on I am Eriq Troiand Jeanine Love on background vocals on Rebel Musik (The Psycho Jam).
This project took me almost 4 years to record. Why so long? Welp.. LIFE!!! This happens or that happens to where I had to put certain things ahead of the project to maintain peace and balance in my life.. dig?
Anywho.. The recording process is DONE!! … NOW THE REAL WORK BEGINS!!! The next process is to find a single which is where YOU guys come in.
All you have to do is listen to the tracks…. leave a comment about the ones YOU like! Yup.. that’s it!
Just so you all know, in order to leave a comment, you have to leave an email. For those who leave a comment I have FREE joints I would love to send you for taking the time to listen.. YOUR KIND EARS are appreciated!
OH!!! I ALMOST FORGOT…. PLEASE SHARE THIS WITH THOSE WHO MAY LIKE THIS TOO…
Thank you soooo much for taking the time to listen
I was going through my hard drive; with all of my songs, demos, and song ideas and thought to myself.. WOW! I have over a thousand pieces of music on this hard drive! SHEESE!!! One particular piece I did was a track in which I sampled various phone noises and made it into a track. I called this track Phone Sex.
Phone Sex has all of the bottom to rattle the trunk, the melodies to carry you into other dimensions, and just enough rhythm to “get your swerve on” (LOL.. I’m so old)..
Initially this project was going to be called Musique Erotica. I didn’t want people to think this it was “porn music”. I didn’t want to alienate people who were a little less adventurous when it came to matters of intimacy either. I also wanted it to be a back drop of straight groove and chill-out music that could serve as the night’s theme for sensual encounters. More importantly, just good music.
If you have already purchased this project, I thank you warmly and ask that you leave a comment, share and tell your friends. I would love to hear your feed back. If you HAVEN’T heard it.. WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR!!! It’s available on iTunes and any where digital music is sold.
